A tropical cactus native to Central America and the West Indies, the epiphyllum is a magnificent Cactaceae without thorns, whose spectacular flowering has seduced more than one amateur gardener. It is easily grown indoors but can be placed in the garden if the climate is right. Fairly undemanding, the orchid cactus grows in well-draining, acidic soil. Be sure to monitor the composition of its fertilizer to keep it healthy.
