Petunia

Petunia is a genus of perennial or annual herbaceous plants in the Solanaceae family, native to tropical regions of South America. There are about twenty species.

The term “petunia” in common language refers to the genus Petunia as Jussieu had defined it in 1803 before the taxonomic revisions at the end of the last century. The scientific term Petunia treated here, refers to the genus Petunia circumscribed by Wijsman in 1990.
