Florist’s buttercup (Ranunculus asiaticus) is a species of perennial herbaceous plant in the family Ranunculaceae native to the eastern Mediterranean (Crete, Greece), southwestern Asia and northern Africa. The Crusaders of Saint Louis discovered it in the Holy Land and introduced it to France but it did not multiply there very much, and it was only under the reign of Mahomet IV, Sultan of the Turks, that the beautiful varieties began to spread in our gardens.
