Gladioli belong to a genus of plants in the Iridaceae family, the genus Gladiolus, which has more than 260 species. The name gladiolus derives from the Latin gladius, meaning “sword”.
They are perennial corms that are now widely used as ornamental plants in beds or for cut flower production.
Gladiolus, which means “little sword” in Latin, refers to the shape of the leaves. The latter are surmounted by a spike inflorescence. Depending on the species, the size of the plant varies.
