Anthurium is a genus of plants of the Araceae family comprising 600 to 800 species, even 1,000 species: it is one of the largest and most complex genera of the family. New species are described each year.
The species have a neotropical distribution: most grow in tropical moist forests (see Tropical and subtropical moist deciduous forests) of Central and South America, but a few grow in semi-arid environments.
They are found from northern Mexico to Argentina and more particularly in Panama, Colombia, Brazil, Guyana, Haiti and Ecuador. They would be absent from Asia although they are found in some Asian rainforests where they would have been introduced: for example, the red anthurium in Sri Lanka.
